【Basics of Standards】Functional Types of Standards - Test Standards
Release time: 2025-04-25

Test standards are also known as test method standards. According to 4.2b of GB/T 1.1-2020 "Directives for Standardization - Part 1: Structure and Drafting Rules for Standardization Documents", a test standard refers to "a standard that comprehensively describes the testing activities and the way of drawing conclusions within the precision range suitable for the specified purpose and under the given environment".

The function of a test standard is to "describe" the test method. Its core technical elements usually include detailed "test procedures" and "test data processing" (calculation methods for results). Sometimes, test standards are accompanied by other contents related to the test, such as principles, test conditions, reagents or materials, instruments and equipment, samples, test reports, etc.

For the structure of test method standards and the drafting rules for the contents such as principles, test conditions, reagents or materials, instruments and equipment, samples, test procedures, test data processing, and test reports, please refer to GB/T 20001.4-2015 "Rules for Preparing Standards - Part 4: Test Method Standards".
